EUMC News! (Aug 1st, 2018)

Meet "J"! She and her mom stopped by Eureka UMC on Monday to pickup one of the FIFTY backpacks prepared and donated through your generosity.

As she and her mom entered the church, she exclaimed, "I'm getting ready to start Kindergarten and mom says that some really nice people are giving me a backpack!"

As we entered the Commons Area, she saw all of the backpacks and ran towards them, wondering which one was hers. We checked the list and pointed her towards a very colorful backpack leaning against the wall. A backpack that had been loving prepared just for her.

"I love it!" she said. "I can't wait to take this to Kindergarten!"

As she slung this new backpack, filled with lots of school supplies, over her shoulder, she grinned. We asked her mom if we could capture her smile in a photo. "Absolutely," she said.

This beautiful backpack dwarfed her tiny frame. She smiled and began walking towards the door. As she neared the door, she stopped, turned around, and said, "please tell the people that I love my backpack."

"J" is one of 50 kids who will begin this school year with a new backpack and the supplies she needs to thrive as a student.

She thanks you!

THRIVE: It's Time for Us to More Than Survive

You may recognize this sermon title as lyrics from a Casting Crowns song. But these words are much more than some lyrics from a song; they echo what Jesus says in John 10:10, "... I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

When it comes to our children, our grandchildren, or any other children in our lives, we don't just want them to survive, we want them to thrive. What does it mean to raise kids that thrive? What can we learn from the children in our lives as we seek to raise thriving kids?

We have identified a family in Eureka that will benefit greatly from some renovations to their home. Their home, although not in the floodplain, was damaged by the intense rain event last year that caused the record flooding. Rain water flooded their home and destroyed the flooring and part of the drywall. Team Rubicon 'gutted' the house in May 2017 and nothing has been done to restore the home. We are in the process of organizing a team in partnership with St. Mark's Lutheran Church to complete this project. Dates are TBD but will likely be in early to mid August. Our volunteer team coordinator for this project is Tom Brozka. If you'd like to be part of the team, whether for a few hours or a few days, please contact Tom at .

The scope of this project will include moving large items (the family will be moved out of their home for about a week), demolition work, cleaning, drywall repairs, painting, new flooring, and repairs in the kitchen and bathroom.

One of our HCI prescriptions included improvements in communication. Our HCI coach advised us that part of that communication is the message that our facility is sending to guests and members. One of the first critical areas to be addressed will be our Fellowship Hall. This is the most widely used space by community groups (Scouts, EHS Football team, exercise classes, square dancers, etc) in our facility. Larry Baner is leading the way with this renovation project.

The scope of this project will include refinishing the floors, drywall repairs, painting, replacing damaged ceiling tiles, and potentially updating the bathrooms. If you are interested in serving on this team, please contact Larry Baner at for more information.

American Ninja Warrior is incredibly popular! Many kids (and their parents) love watching these competitors compete on some amazing obstacle courses.

We invite you to bring your children, grandchildren, and their friends to be part of our American Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course for Kids on Saturday, September 15th from 3-5 pm. This amazing, family friendly event will be held on the South parking lot of Eureka UMC!
